A Day on Johns Island
Johns Island manages to still feel rural and quaint despite its population doubling in the last ten years. While it continues to grow, you can still see the rural influence in established neighborhoods and even some of the new construction developments. If you're new here, there's a lot to explore in my hometown!
If it's Saturday, check out the Sea Island Farmers Market on Charleston Collegiate school's campus 9:30am - 1:30pm. You'll find everything from local meats and eggs to locally made jewelry. The fresh baked sourdough bread, homemade chicken salad, and just-picked produce are worth the trip. A locally served coffee at Estuary Beans and Barley is an ideal way to start the day. I love their Costa Rica blend! On Sundays they offer morning yoga and live music in the evening.
If you're settling in for a day-trip, here are the best experiences to enjoy in no particular order:
Angel Oak Tree - Our prized live oak that is 65 feet tall with a circumference of 25.5 feet. Estimated to be 500 years old!
Charleston Tea Plantation - Various tours including a trolley tour of the gardens and greenhouse (a must-see) or a complimentary factory tour.
Deep Water Vineyard - Nestled on 48-acres on Wadmalaw Island, it's the only domestic winery in Charleston. In addition to tours and a tasting room, they host various festivals and music events throughout the year... many that are family friendly on the lawn. You can even bring your own picnic! Ideal for a cool fall day.
Blackbird Market has it all! Fresh local produce and seafood available. Deli sandwiches for lunch starting at 11am and daily dinner specials made to order. Do not miss their soft shell crab sandwich during softie season! They also have my favorite selection of prepared foods. I love to pick up produce for a nice salad, grab a soup and a biscuit or croissant dough for an easy dinner.
You'll find a similar set up at both the Stono Market and the Tomato Shed Cafe, but they have a true "cafe" where you can sit while being served. If you're headed for lunch the veggie plate is an easy way to sample the sides, especially the squash casserole. If you're feeling meaty, don't pass up the pimento cheese burger, but don't call me complaining that you need a nap after! Their to-go market boasts famous prepared foods like their tomato pie, shrimp casserole, and chicken & sausage bog.
For your browsing and shopping needs, The Tree House on Main Road is an essential stop for all things lowcountry garden and more. View beautiful fountains, oversized planters and wind chimes galore while you walk the exterior. Inside you'll find lots of locally sourced gifts and any yard decor you could ever imagine.
Now that it's time for dinner, Zeppelin's pizza is ideal for pick-up if you're not cooking. Pizzaiolos is their specialty and should be tried at least once. Your picky eaters will not participate due to the peppers but don't let that scare you - it's yummy!
If you're dressed and going out - it's Wild Olive or Royal Tern. Wild Olive was the first "nice" restaurant to arrive on Johns Island in 2009 and it rightfully owns the title of the island's favorite for dinner. Reservations highly recommended but there is a small bar area with first-come first-serve seating and a community table. The calamari is one of my go-tos. Lasagna and tagliatelle are solid staples and always deliver. Specials should always be considered! If you're not in the mood for pasta, the veal is phenomenal (although salty) and the ribeye is impressively prepared. Don't skip ordering sides of the potato gnocchi side or broccolini and artichokes. Go ahead and get some boxes so you can order a freshly house-made dessert or gelato. Any staff member will tell you EVOO and Sea Salt is the crowd-favorite. Royal Tern boasts lots of local seafood and thoughtfully curated combinations. Raw bar options and a fabulous tuna and salmon tartare. They have an impressive dessert offering as well! If you're bringing the kids, Royal Tern can feel a bit more inviting and welcoming for a family meal.
Annual events for Johns Island include the Johns Island County Park's Toast Under the Oaks in March and Harvest Festival each fall. My family particularly enjoys the unlimited hay ride at the Harvest Festival. The park also hosts various trail races and equestrian events throughout the year. Tons of incredible trails to explore on this 738-acre park.
