Who has the best Philly Cheesesteak In Charleston?

My neighbors and I recently concluded a long anticipated field trip to find the best Philly Cheesesteak sandwich in Charleston. We covered 3 counties and 4 cities to taste 5 cheesesteaks in 30 hours. The debate is over, and results are in!

Our chosen spots were all highly recommended, and we ordered the same thing at each restaurant: steak, provolone, onions, peppers and mushrooms. All were great, but I’ve ranked them for those who don’t have the stomach to try all of them like we did.

  1. Philly Cheesesteak at 134 St James Ave in Goose Creek. Not only was this our favorite cheesesteak, but it was special dealing with the owner-operator Shelly and her 2 trusted helpers. The bread was very soft and ingredients were chopped fine and flavorful.

  2. Db’s at Avondale in West Ashley. Finely shaved meat with pickled pepper strips to add crunch and give it a sweet taste. The bread was chewy (in a good way).

  3. The Southern on Coleman in Mt Pleasant. They did not offer provolone cheese, and I’m not fond of the white American so that sent it to the bottom of my list. I can see why many people recommend it, though.

  4. Yous Guys Sandwich Shop on Folly Road, James Island. No room to eat inside, so takeout only.

All were order-at-the-counter, and all were similar in price. Some came with a side and others were “a la carte.”
