Fall Family Fun
Summer is what often draws people to Charleston, but we think October is when our city really shows off all she has to offer. Our temperate climate means many of the summer's best activites are still in play (and less crowded), and a whole host of new adventures are as ripe for the taking as a fat, orange pumpkin from Boone Hall Farms! Here's a list of what you'll find our team doing with our families this fall.
Beach - the summer tourists have exited and the beach is left to locals. After September, it's too cold for us to enjoy swimming, but beach walking and shell seeking never goes out of season!
Boating - the waterways are much less crowded and there are still plenty of dolphins and wildlife to watch.
Farms - whether it's Legare Farms or at Boone Hall, we love visiting farms to pet the animals and pick pumpkins.
Camping - James Island County Park offers both campsites and very cool cabins!
*Pro tip - if you're lucky enough to combine the two and go camping by boat, you're living like a local! We recommend Capers Island or the beach at channel marker 76 in the Stono River.
Historical Sites - Fall is a great time to visit Magnolia Plantation or Charlestowne Landing, take in the history without the sweat and competing with too many tourists.
Football Viewing - Weekend football is best watched at Charleston Sports Pub, with 5 locations around town there's sure to be one near you. Don't miss the BLT salad!
Fall Festivals - Many schools and towns host these all around, but the main event is the Harvest Festival on Johns Island hosted by Charleston County Parks. It's a full day affair, so plan accordingly.
Oyster roasts - you can eat local oysters safely in any months with an "R," and November is our recommendation. Steamed oysters are best when there are no bugs and a bonfire going.
Local Sports - experiencing Clemson's Death Valley and USC's Willy B are rites of passage for all South Carolinians, but if you aren't up for an interstate trek, head to the Coliseum to catch Stingrays hockey in action in October or check out a CofC basketball game starting in November.
Breweries - we love trying the seasonal local offerings at Holy City and Hobcaw Brewing.
Coffee shops - we always try to sip pumpkin spice locally! Metto, Huriyali, Vintage.
Bakeries - it's a perfect time of year to check out fresh baked goods at Baguette Magic .
Haunted Tours - Bulldog's haunted jail tour downtown and Boone Hall Farms' Fright Night haunted hayride.
