Caribbean Delight

Caribbean Delight is a diamond in the rough. Located in a run down part of North Charleston (3309 Rivers Avenue), the building is non descript and easy to miss. It is definitely a “dive” but worth the trip for the outstanding food.

I invited my adventurous friend to try it with me. When I arrived in the parking lot, I called to warn her about the sketchiness of the place. Too late, she was already inside! Ambrose (originally from Jamaica) was running the counter with one woman helping. Ambrose was great about helping us pick items that would give us a good sampling. The food came quickly, and all was delicious. We got the brown baked chicken special of the day and chose beans & rice and cabbage for the sides. The jerk pork came with beans & rice and collards. The only other side offered was white rice. We got a curry chicken Roti, a chicken stew concoction in a loosely rolled Roti bread. A beef pie finished out the tasting menu. There are standing specials for each day of the week. The portions were so generous I ate on leftovers for several days. They do mostly take-out but have a counter and a few booths. Everything was served in disposable containers with cheap fork and knife packets. Fine dining it ain’t but outstanding food it is!
