A Day on Sullivans Island
Everyone has a favorite beach in Charleston, and mine is Sullivan's Island. Our family's beach house, The Ark, is more than 100 years old and has survived multiple hurricanes. The beach island has grown and morphed around her for generations, but its charm remains unchanged.
The best way to explore is on bike. Rides to The Co-Op for breakfast has become a favorite morning tradition. I recommend the Heart Healthy breakfast sandwich and a Frose to go (frozen rose wine) for a beach picnic at your favorite station. Unlike Avenues on Isle of Palms, streets on Sullivans are named "Stations," and our favorite is 28.5. You'll find every local has a favorite station for one reason or another.
There's more to the island than the beach! If you need a break from the sun and have little ones that need to get some energy out, visit the public playground and the Sullivan's Island fire station next door.
Time for lunch? There is something about bathing suits, salty skin and hot sun that makes you crave queso and a margarita. Mex 1 has the BEST margarita in town! It's actually award winning, and their baja bowls always hit the spot.
After an afternoon nap (if you're that lucky!) hop back on the bikes and pedal towards the northeastern end of the island for happy hour. The Boathouse Restaurant is technically on Isle of Palms, but it has THE BEST SUNSET VIEW in town. Sit up top on the open deck overlooking the intracoastal waterway and Breach Inlet, which separates Sullivans from Isle of Palms. You can't swim at Breach Inlet (the undertow is too dangerous), so seeing it from the crow's nest at the Boat House is your best bet. Dolphin sightings guaranteed!
A later dinner is recommended on Sullivan's - remember you're on "island time." Make reservations ahead of time for Obstinate Daughter or put your name on the list at The Longboard. Both have fine dining vibes with a beachy casual flare.
Is Sullivan's your favorite Charleston beach yet?
