2020 Design Trends
We are often asked “what’s the next trend?” in home design. In the past it’s been materials like quartz countertops and subway tile… or features like shiplap and barn doors... but this year it’s color! Read on to learn about the retreat from gray and your home’s colorful future.
This year will see bold colors that introduce personality and create a statement. Mood Boards are now swathed in rich greens, pinks and even black. The Sherwin-Williams color of the year is Naval, a deep blue that’s both luxurious and versatile. Their Director of Color Marketing says, "these dark, rich colors envelop us and make us feel cozy, turning our homes into the retreats we’re all craving.” Which sounds cool in theory but intimidating in practice, so we suggest starting small with a splash of color in a powder room or as an accent wall.
We’ve always recommended neutral wall paint to create a blank canvas where your accessories can play. Our loyalty remains, but “neutral” is being redefined in a major way. Heavily pigmented colors like blush pink and black have been categorized as neutrals by interior designers. It sounds crazy, but they can in fact achieve the blank canvas we’re after.
It’s been more than ten years ago that gray dethroned beige as the darling neutral. The interior design world claims beige is staging a comeback. We’re ready for warmer, more organic tones after years of cooler hues that lack life. But unlike the sandy, yellow-beige of the 2000’s, this time beige is coming back as “greige” - or gray/beige. Our favorites are Sherwin-Williams Gossamer Veil (often found in our listings) and Worldly Grey (the color B.V. recently chose for her house). In addition to beige walls, designers predict we'll see much more natural wood in furniture, décor, and even cabinetry.
